“Building Hope for Our Children” Grand Gala Benefits the
Children’s Cancer Center at Broward General
Fort Lauderdale, FL –It was an evening at the Moulin Rouge for the “Building Hope for Our Children” Grand Gala which took place on March 10th at the Broward County Convention Center. The gala raised funds for the Children’s Cancer Center at Broward General Medical Center. Nearly 400 attendees were treated to an evening in Paris with entertainment from Le Clique and the Bobby Rodriguez Orchestra.
Honorary Chair for the event was Lorraine Thomas and special guests included tennis great Chris Evert who spoke on behalf of the great work done at the Children’s Cancer Center and the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, both located at Broward General Medical Center. Also at the event were golf legend Greg Norman, the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners plus a host of Broward County supporters of the cause.
Brandon Agata, who was one of the 106 children treated for cancer at the center last year, was in attendance. Brandon who is now in remission, was with his family and featured in a video about the care they received. The finale of the program included an announcement from Jim Kleinrichert of the James Jr. Fund, and Dave Amchir with the South Florida Motorcyclist Council, who announced a joint pledge of $250,000 for the expansion of the center. The Committee also honored long time volunteer and donor Don Taft who generously donated $400,000 to the Children’s Cancer Center.
“We are so thankful to all the generous donors who are helping us build hope for our children,” said Alan Levine President/CEO of the North Broward Hospital District. “Just less than 40 years ago, the 5-year survival rate for children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia – the most common childhood cancer – was about 5%. Today, it is 85%. That’s because of the continued dedication and compassion of physicians, researchers, donors and volunteers.”
A silent auction, dinner, dancing and entertainment rounded out the evening as well as door prizes from Neiman Marcus.
The Chris Evert Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Cancer Center at Broward General Medical Center are part of the North Broward Hospital District (NBHD).
