An Evening of Good Times for a Good Cause at the
10th Annual UF AHA Gator Guayabera Guateque

It was an evening of good food, good music and good times for a good cause as the University of Florida Association of Hispanic Alumni (UF AHA) celebrated its 10th annual Gator Guayabera Guateque on May 18th at Villa 221.

The Gator Guayabera Guateque is the annual signature event of the UF AHA, an affiliate organization of the University of Florida Alumni Association.  Proceeds from the Guateque benefit UF AHA scholarships, the UF AHA Endowment Fund and the Institute of Hispanic Latino Cultures at the University of Florida.

The Rafael and Fe Angulo Scholarships honor memory of Mr. and Mrs. Angulo who opened their home to Hispanic UF students in the 1960s. The Colonel Glenn A. Farris Scholarship honors Col. Farris, who during the 1960s helped hundreds of recently-exiled Cubans enter UF and successfully pursue degrees. These are merit-based scholarships that recognize excellence in leadership, service, scholarship and a positive impact on the Hispanic-Latino community.

This year the UF AHA honored University of Florida President Dr. J. Bernard Machen as the Gran Caiman of the Year for his long-standing and continued support of the UF AHA and the Hispanic community at the University of Florida.  The award is presented annually to a University of Florida alumnus who is a great representative of the university, as well as a strong contributor to the educational, cultural, or social communities in which they participate.  The Gran Caiman exemplifies leadership, integrity and compassion to the people they serve, and is a loyal and spirited Gator.

UF AHA President Juan Carlos Enjamio, and Past Presidents Ignacio Abella and Carlos Hondal presented President Machen with the award and a custom, commemorative guayabera at the event.  Attendees also heard from Genesis Lara and Jonathan Augustin—University of Florida students who are recipients of the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars program, which supports low-income students who are first in their families to attend college. The University of Florida is committed to financially supporting academically talented students who might not otherwise attend UF because of financial barriers.  The UF AHA, as an organization, and through the generous contributions of individual members, also supports the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars program.
