HANDY HONORS 2013 COLLEGE GRADUATES & CHAMPIONS OF CHILDREN

HANDY is pleased to announce that at its eighth annual Scholars Breakfast, which took place on Friday, May 10th at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six at 8 a.m. was a huge success totaling over $50,000 in net proceeds with over 450 guests in attendance.

HANDY recognized three Champions of Children whose interest, vision, and generous support have significantly contributed to HANDY’s success.  This year, HANDY’s Champions of Children were: The Jerry Taylor and Nancy Bryant Foundation, Florida Atlantic University President, Mary Jane Saunders, Ph.D., and AutoNation Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Gale Butler. HANDY also honored their 2013 college graduates who have achieved their college degrees against all odds.

Last year HANDY proudly served more than 1,300 children/youth with the following outcomes:
•    97 percent of HANDY youth remained in school and were promoted to the next grade.
•    95 percent of HANDY youth graduated high school, as compared to 26 percent of youth leaving foster care who did not attend HANDY.
•    95 percent of HANDY high school graduates enrolled either in college or a technical school as opposed to 15 percent of foster care youth not in our program.
•    70 percent of HANDY’s scholarship youth graduate college as compared to 3 percent nationally for the same population.
•    HANDY’s Emergency and Children’s Need Program provided 1,187 children with emergency assistance for food, clothing, beds.  It also assisted caregivers and older youth with transportation and emergency housing to prevent homelessness.

HANDY’s programs embrace, educate, and empower youth to become engaged adults.  As one of HANDY’s high school seniors stated, “HANDY, it’s more than just a program, it’s a lifestyle.”
