Friends of Museum of Discovery and Science Ends Season with an Elegant Sunset Soiree.

Friends of MODS kicked off its end-of-season celebration with an elegant Sunset Soiree held on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the luxurious Commodore on Galt Ocean Drive in Fort Lauderdale. Museum of Discovery and Science supporters gathered to celebrate the hard work and dedication of one of the Museum’s most fundamental auxiliary support groups, Friends of MODS. The annual event is an opportunity for the Friends Board to present the Museum of Discovery and Science with a check for the money raised during the past season, and to introduce and welcome the 2012-2013 Friends of MODS Auxiliary Board. The free event was graciously hosted at the home of Friends of MODS member, Shabnam Alibhai.

With nearly 100 guests in attendance, Museum supporters enjoyed the smooth sounds of jazz, played by pianist Gary Mayone, echoing throughout the penthouse condominium as they sipped on delicious cocktails and enjoyed an array of tasty hors d’oeuvres.

This year, Friends of MODS proudly presented a check of $11,600 on behalf of the Museum of Discovery and Science to Executive Vice President of Development, Patrick Flynn. The check represented funds raised through Friends of MODS Museum memberships and fundraising events coordinated by the auxiliary group since August 2011.

Flynn expressed appreciation for Friends of MODS members, not only for raising funds on behalf of the Museum, but also for demonstrating their support and commitment to the Museum in various aspects, such as welcoming fellow supporters into their own homes. “We are so grateful to our Friends of MODS member, Shabnam Alibhai, for opening up her extraordinary penthouse for the benefit of Friends of MODS.” Flynn continued, “It was a memorable evening, and set the stage so perfectly for the new Friends board to reach new heights with their upcoming events.  The Museum is very privileged to have patrons like Shabnam, our fantastic Friends President, Janet Buhl, and all the very dedicated Friends officers and members.”

The Museum of Discovery and Science is proud to welcome its new Friends of MODS board members: Janet Buhl, President; Nila Do of Gulfstream Media, President Elect; Katherine Dover of Christopher & Weisberg, P.A., VP of Publicity; Diana Chibas of Philosophy, VP of Membership; Katie Donahue of The Riverside Hotel, VP of Membership, Kerry Ferguson of Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, LLP, VP of Ways & Means; Manya Lowry, Recording Secretary; and Jennifer Shippole, Corresponding Secretary.

Friends of MODS Members at Large include: Gail Bulfin of Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance; Janet Gomes; Brittany Manzie of Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort; Kimberly Miller of Gallery ONE Doubletree; Lauren Miller of Charles Rutenberg Realty; Mercy Padron; Nanci Simonson of BB&T; Maureen Shea of Right Management; and Erin Sutherland of Bank of America.
