Women In Distress Auxiliary hosted their second annual “MARDI GRAS CARNIVALE” on Friday, October 13, 2006 at Bahia Mar Hotel.  Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception and munched on delicious appetizers.   Following the reception, guests adjourned to the main ballroom, colorfully decorated in festive Mardi Gras Style by Prager Productions. They were greeted with the lively tones of Elliot Varnes & The Main Event” who provided toe stomping music that had guests dancing all evening.

A Live Auction with Thom Bogdan , was conducted as guests were served a lovely dinner by the staff of Bahia Mar.  At 9:00, guests were welcomed into the Casino setting, for a fun evening of gambling and wagering at the tables.

All proceeds benefit Women In Distress of Broward County, an organization that empowers and assists victims of domestic violence, their children and pets with temporary shelter and support services, instilling self-worth and non-violent behavior patterns for all family members and delivering prevention and awareness education in our community.

The Gala was appropriately planned for October to promote and create awareness of Domestic Violence Awareness Month”.  Since it’s Inception in 1974 it began as Broward County's first refuge for homeless women in a modest four-bedroom home on Sistrunk Boulevard, the.  Jim & Jan Moran Family Center opened instantly increasing WID's visibility, accessibility and capacity to serve more families and provided the means to include licensed day care, counseling, legal aid, job training, a volunteer program and a thrift store. WID was one of the first agencies in the nation to establish a total family systems approach to stopping domestic violence.  In 1999, Janet A. Boyle established a $1 million endowment for Women In Distress that will ensure future operations of our organization. Janet's generosity has established a legacy benefiting Women In Distress of Broward County Inc.,and it's participants and employees for future generations.  Domestic violence hurts the whole family.  The community must help by speaking out and saying  “Domestic Violence is Unacceptable”.

Special thanks goes to Mr. Joseph Scaturro, President of Seminole Casualty Insurance Company, for his support and sponsorship of the Gala who committed $50,000 for this year’s Gala.  His generosity and the generosity of other sponsors is the contributing factor for the success of our event!

Chairman of this year’s Gala, Michelle Case-Tunis together with Co-Chair, Pat Purmort, and their entire committee worked tirelessly to create a Gala that provided guests and supporters an evening filled with
