EcoDiscovery Center Grand Opening Gala

held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 raised over $300,000
to benefit the Museum of Discovery and Science.

Kim L. Cavendish, president and chief executive officer of the Museum of Discovery and Science, announced today that the EcoDiscovery Center Grand Opening Gala held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 raised over $300,000 to benefit the Museum of Discovery and Science.

The Mercedes-Benz Fort Lauderdale EcoDiscovery Center Grand Opening Gala was held in the new, 34,000 square foot EcoDiscovery Center. A major expansion of the Museum of Discovery and Science, the new EcoDiscovery Center, which more than doubles the Museum’s current exhibit space, offers more dynamic exploration. Cavendish said, “It was a very proud moment, as president of the Museum, to unveil the new EcoDiscovery Center to such a distinguished list of Museum trustees, business and society leaders.”

Over 650 guests began the celebration at 6:00 p.m. with the Wells Fargo Cocktail Reception that included an open bar generously provided by Southern Wine & Spirits. The reception was held on the first floor of the new EcoDiscovery Center that features five major exhibit areas: Prehistoric Florida, Otters At Play, Storm Center, Florida Water Story and the Everglades Airboat Adventure. Four “talking head” models emerged from the silent auction tables chatting and posing for photos with guests. Champagne glasses were kept filled by champagne angels suspended from the atrium ceiling. An Opera flash mob punctuated the evening and delighted guests as they escorted them up the grand staircase to the dining area.

After cocktails, guests enjoyed a magnificent dining experience by A Thierry’s Catering with everglades themed centerpieces complete with a fog simulation. Two aerial artists gave delightful performances during dinner. WSVN Meteorologist, Julie Durda, served as mistress of ceremonies. A live auction was kicked off with Sheriff for a Day presented by Sheriff Lamberti. Other luxury auction items included a cruise among the Galapagos Islands, cruise aboard The World of Residensea, an African Safari, cruise aboard Seabourn, and a magnificent Hermes watch. A rockin’ dance party capped off the evening.

The gala’s success is a tribute to the volunteer leadership of its outstanding team of event Co-Chairs Katy and Jon Ferrando of AutoNation, Doreen and Keith Koenig of City Furniture, Jamie and Terry Stiles of Stiles Corporation and Tom Angelo of Angelo & Banta.

Major sponsors included presenting sponsor Mercedes-Benz Fort Lauderdale; Wells Fargo (cocktail reception sponsor) and Southern Wine & Spirits (exclusive beverage sponsor). Additional sponsors and event partners include BB&T; Linda & Douglas Von Allmen; Hamilton M. & Blanche C.
