YOU'VE BEEN SERVED
FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD
FROM THE DESK OF Anthony J. Karrat, Esq.
It is with great pleasure that I join you this evening in paying tribute to the Honorees of the 9th Annual FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD and recognizing them for their contributions to Legal Aid Service of Broward County and the difference they make in our community. Each of the honorees exemplifies what "giving back" means.
For the first time, the prestigious Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award will be presented to a non-lawyer, Belinda Keiser, Vice Chancellor of Community Relations, Keiser University. Belinda started her career at Legal Aid as the Pro Bono Coordinator of Broward Lawyers Care (BLC) and has continued her support of the agency by serving on the Executive Council and advocating for Legal Aid and the poor through her efforts in Tallahassee.
2009 brought a lot of growth and change at Legal Aid. In November 2009, NEXT (Next EXecutive Team) a "young-ish" professional group whose goal is to educate the professional community on the mission of Legal Aid and engage the future leaders of Broward County in Legal Aid, was successfully launched with an after hours networking event attended by over 100 people. In December 2009, Debra Kropowski was named Regional Director of Advocacy for Legal Aid Service of Broward County, Coast to Coast Legal Aid and Legal Aid Service of Collier County. An attorney in the Senior/Elder Unit of Coast to Coast since 2003, Debra's legal expertise and commitment to our clients and the training and education of Legal Aid's staff makes her ideal for this position. In January, The Florida Bar Foundation approved a grant to hire a Social Media Coordinator; though this was uncharted territory, we thank The Florida Bar Foundation for believing in us and the concept.
2010 has demomstrated that the economic challenges faced by clients have not lessened as we experience increases in children and families seeking our services. Foreclosures, evictions, immigration, unemployment and homelessness are major issues in Broward County. Our offices are overwhelmed with people seeking guidence and help. To assist statewide Legal Aids in meeting the increasing demand, this year, The Florida Bar lauched the "ONE CAMPAIGN" - One Client - One Attorney - One Promise. We encourage Broward Attorneys to become a part of this pro bono campaign.
