Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale fundraiser honors

“Legends of Education”, raising over $40,000
The Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club, established March, 1922, hosted its annual fundraiser banquet on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Fort Lauderdale Grande Hotel and Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale. The program’s theme was the first of its kind, honoring “Legends of Education”, with an impressive lineup including: Dr. Abraham Fischler, President Emeritus of Nova Southeastern University, Willis N. Holcombe, Chancellor for Florida’s Community College System, Dr. Arthur Keiser, CEO and Chancellor of Keiser University, and Belinda Keiser, Vice Chancellor Community Relations and Student Advancement for Keiser University.
“The theme was fitting since our club has funded more than $1.5 million in scholarships over the past 40 years”, says Martin Kurtz, President of the Club. Kurtz worked with co-chairs of the event Marvin Chaney and Dirk Basting for several months to create a successful event raising approximately $43,000 from roughly 165 attendees. “We had a little less in attendance this year yet raised more money. Despite the economy, people still give to what’s important. We reached and surpassed our goals”, notes Kurtz.
Honoree Fischler adds, “In a tough economy, it’s even more important to help those in need. Education is not an elective and we need to do what we can to make sure it’s always available. The Rotary club does a great job.”
The annual event played host to a cocktail party with an extensive silent auction, dinner, dancing, and a live auction led by Fisher Auctioneers for outstanding prizes donated by Club members: two tickets on Lufthansa to Europe, a Goodyear Blimp Ride for four, Private catered party for ten, one week in park city Utah, a Jazz Cruise on MS Statendam, a Wine and Baseball trip to New York City with a hotel stay (that was upgraded that evening from the Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria by Peter Henn, Vice President of Luxury Hotels and Resorts who donated the hotel for the trip), and a trip to Oktoberfest in Germany with airline and hotel. Mayor Naugle of Fort Lauderdale opened the ceremonies and President Kurtz presented proclamations to all honorees.  Scholarship recipient Erica Linden thanked the club for her scholarship and said that she has agreed to help continue the vision by working with Rotary Club members to create an alumni association of recipients to assist Rotary with its future endeavors.
100% of the auction proceeds raised at the Gala go to the Fort Lauderdale Rotary 1090 Foundation, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) Corporation. The 1090 Foundation supports college scholarships for Broward County High School Students and other charitable causes following a formal grant application review process. In 2007, the 1090 Foundation, supported by the fundraising efforts of the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale and several Universities, granted over $200,000 in scholarships.
