Miss Broward County Scholarship Pageant at Rose Miniaci Center - NSU, Sunday, March 20, 2008
The Miss Broward County Scholarship Pageant held Sunday, March 20, 2008 hosted its first Miss Ft. Lauderdale Riverwalk Scholarship pageant winner. The event was held at the Rose Miniaci Center at Nova Southeastern University. Jenise Fernandez was crowned Miss Ft. Lauderdale Riverwalk. Ms. Fernandez is a student at Florida International University and her Platform is – “Creating Miracles Now.”
Other winners included:
Miss Broward County - Jennifer Sanford, University of Central Florida and her platform is Fund & Fight For a Cure.
Miss Florida Everglades - Jacqueline Urbuteit, University of Florida, and her platform is Upward Bound – Mentoring to Underprivileged Children About The Importance of Education.
Miss Florida Teen - Taylor Thomas, Piper High School, and her platform is, Stop the Bullying.
The reining Miss Florida Kylie Williams along with last year’s pageant winners crowned the 2008 winners. Ms Williams thanked the Miss America Organization for giving her the opportunity to graduate from collage debt free. Scholarships awarded to pageant participants nationwide total more than $45 Million annually.
Miss Florida Riverwalk, Miss Broward County and Miss Florida Everglades will compete in the Miss Florida Pageant in July and hopefully one of them will move on to the Miss America Pageant later this year. The pageant winners will visit many South Florida community venues throughout the year. These young women are not only beautiful, talented and goal driven but are the inspiration for any young people looking for positive role models in today’s youth.
All of the Winners and runners up of the Miss Broward County Scholarship Pageant received a total of $20,000 in scholarship monies provided by The Wasie Foundation. Over 23 wonderful and talented contestants participated to win one of four titles for which the winners in each category were awarded up to $5000 in scholarships.

The Miss Broward County Scholarship Pageant serves as the annual fund raiser for Scholarship for South Florida, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization. Scholarship for South Florida’s mission is to provide scholarship assistance to students that would not qualify for traditional academic scholarships. The organizations targets the “middle of the road” student who has a solid academic background and maintains 3.0 or greater GPA. Scholarship for South Florida, Inc. is in its first year of operation.
The Wasie Foundation serves as a vital, enduring legacy of Minneapolis trucking pioneer Stanley L. Wasie, a Polish immigrant who overcame early hardship to achieve the American dream. The Wasie Foundation works in close partnership with community organizations to help encourage a spirit of self-reliance. Education is one of the five key areas of focus for this Foundation.
