 2007 Broward County Mayor’s Gala
Fort Lauderdale, FL  – Broward County Mayor, Josephus Eggelletion, Jr., hosted the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Broward County “An Evening in the Tropics” gala on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the Broward County Convention Center.
Proceeds from the gala will be distributed to Broward Health Sickle Cell Transitional Center and Memorial Sickle Cell Day Hospital. Guests will enjoy an evening of tropical fun while dining on island themed delights and dancing to Junkeroo and Top 40 music. CBS 4 Sports Director, Jim Berry, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
Broward County Mayor, Josephus Eggelletion, Jr., and representatives from Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System joined together to assist Broward County residents who suffer from this debilitating blood disorder. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells in more than 75,000 Americans. Approximately 1 out of every 375 African American births, 1 out of every 1000 Hispanic American births are affected with some form of blood disorder related to sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait.   Mayor Egelletion is passionate about this cause because a majority of individual with a sickle cell disorder are residents of South Florida.
Memorial Sickle Cell Day Hospital is a leader in sickle cell pain treatment and the first program in the nation to receive “Disease-Specific Certification” from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Memorial Sickle Cell Day Hospital is a comprehensive program providing a host of services to support sickle cell patients, including psychosocial support, disease management in four languages, including English, Spanish, Creole and French and a transitional program that helps adolescents transition from pediatric care to adult care. Broward Health has a longstanding Pediatric Sickle Cell Day Hospital that provides management of acute and chronic pain for newborns to adolescents. Now through a grant from the Health Foundation of South Florida, Broward Health has opened a Transitional Sickle Cell Day Hospital for young adults from 18 to 28 years old. It includes eight patient beds, a nutrition center, and an entertainment area for patients while they receive medical treatment for sickle cell crisis and obtain wellness care in order to avoid another crisis.
