MICCOSUKEE ZO’S SUMMER GROOVE
WAS BIGGER, BETTER AND MORE FUN THAN EVER
MIAMI, FL- July 20, 2007 – All grooved for a good cause in South Florida during the 2007 Miccosukee Zo’s Summer Groove. Professional athletes, comedians, actresses and local VIPs participated in support of the five day fundraiser from July 11th – July 15th.
Miccosukee Zo’s Summer Groove kicked off on Wednesday, July 11th, with the Nike ZSG Youth Basketball Clinic in Broward where approximately 1,000 children had the opportunity to learn the sport from the pros including: Udonis Haslem, Miami Heat; Carlos Boozer, Utah Jazz; Damien Wilkins, Seattle Supersonics; Kenny Anderson, Indiana Pacers; and Fred Jones, NY Knicks; Nike generously donated 1,000 sneakers and t-shirts for all participants.
Celebrities helped tee-off for charity during the City Furniture ZSG Golf Classic at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa on Thursday, July 12. Those in attendance included: Alonzo Mourning, Jason Taylor, Miami Dolphins; Duane Starks, Oakland Raiders; Randy Moss, New England Patriots; Lee Elder, Golf Pro and 1st African American PGA Golfer; Ken Griffey Sr., major league baseball star; Dre Bly, Denver Broncos; Harry Carson, Retired NFL player; Tony Nathan, Retired NFL player; Terry Kirby, Retired NFL player; Raja Bell, Phoenix Suns;and Penny Hardaway, Orlando Magic.
An additional 1,000 children from the Overtown Youth Center, Children’s Home Society and other local organizations participated in the Nike ZSG Youth Basketball Clinic in Dade on Friday, July 13th. Young basketball fans at this clinic received tips from Dorell Wright, Miami Heat; Dahntay Jones, Memphis Grizzlies; Kenyon Martin, Denver Nuggets;andretired NBA player Tim Hardaway.
The festivities continued on Friday night at the Hard Rock Live for the Heineken ZSG Comedy Show. The event was hosted by Comedian Benji Brown and featured Mike Epps, Gary Owen, Marvin Dixon and Katt Williams. Hip-Hop artist T.I. closed the show with a special performance. Celebrities in the audience included Dwyane Wade from the Miami Heat actress, Essence Atkins and rapper Fat Joe.
The following morning, 360 young children had the opportunity to voice and discuss important topics and real life situations around the theme of racism and self esteem, as part of the Aquafina ZSG Youth Summitat Jungle Island. A panel of role models and celebrities, on hand to guide the symposium and offer insights, included Alonzo Mourning, Antawn Jamisonof the Washington Wizards; Kevin Bentley of the Seattle Seahawks; Ed Lover best known from Yo! MTV Raps;NBC6’s Adam Kuperstein; and Filmmaker Kiri Davis.
The Groove got glamorous on Saturday night at the InterContinental Hotel in Miami for the Publix ZSG Benefit Dinner. Actress Gabrielle Union and Comedian Finesse Mitchell were the hosts of the evening, where guests enjoyed silent and live auctions and a performance by Soul and R&B singer Betty Wright. TNT’s Kenny Smith was the co-auctioneer for the live auction where two lucky families bid $10,000 each to have Dwyane Wade come to their child’s next birthday party. Other celebrity guests at the dinner included Rocsi of BET’s 106 & Park and Comedians Marvin Dixon and Gary Owens.
On Sunday, July 15, the Volkswagen ZSG Block Party outside of the AmericanAirlines Arena featured giveaways, fun rides and entertainment from performers including Young Berg and Dirtbag.
Festivities moved into the Arena that evening for the Carnival Cruise Lines ZSG All-Star Basketball Game which included players from around the league such as: Damon Stoudamire, Memphis Grizzlies; Jason Hart, LA Clippers; Sam Cassell, LA Clippers; Chris Wilcox, Seattle Supersonics; Quentin Richardson, NY Knicks; Delonte West, Portland TrailBlazers; and ZaZa Pachulia, Atlanta Hawks.
The game featured many opportunities for great giveaways, contests and entertaining performances including local Hip-hop artist Rick Ross. More than 4,000 children attended the game for free and many celebrities, including Dennis Rodman and rapper T.I.,were on hand cheering on their favorite players. Six children including Tyronesha Hayes, Charisma Clark, Akheem Brunson, Renee Roberson, Brittany Jean and Junior Estima, were awarded the Super Six Award, for their dedication to inspiring, helping and motivating others in youth circles. Erica Wilton was presented with the Fanny Threet Award for the difference she is making in the lives of children in foster care. Norma Jean Abraham received the Helping Hands Award for the outstanding service she provides our community.
Alonzo Mourning closed the evening and Miccosukee Zo’s Summer Groove on a high note when he announced he will be coming back to play with the Miami HEAT for one final season.
