Setting a goal to make the Jackson Memorial Foundation's annual gala a "million dollar net night" and being instrumental in accomplishing that goal has been a proud personal accomplishment. With the help of my co-chairs, Fana Holtz and Lourdes Arriola, our committee, and Joan Bender, Vice President of JMF, we transformed the event into a true fundraiser.
How did you determine which charitable organizations you would support?
My family supports many causes for many different reasons. Our primary cause is Jackson Memorial Hospital. My step-daughter was in a terrible car accident and pronounced deceased on the police report. There is no question that the Drs. and staff at Ryder Trauma saved her life. We realized a high quality of care and support is provided by all the facilities at Jackson and now we work hard to ensure that everyone in need gets the highest quality health care possible. We cannot have a world class city without world class healthcare.
Do you have a motto, or some words of wisdom, that has guided you through your life?
"We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love"-Mother Teresa
How do you stay so motivated and committed?
To be totally honest, my motivation is at times lacking. It's very hard to juggle the quality and quantity of time between home life and my causes. Committee meetings are a great motivator for me. The realization sinks in that people are counting on me. That thought leads me to the reasons I became involved and the goals I have made and I'm motivated by!!!
Is there a charitable even you really look forward to attending each year?
The Jackson Memorial Foundation (JMF) Gala, The Guardian Angels Annual Luncheon.
What is your greatest strength that makes you such an asset to your organization?
I was a stockbroker for 10 years. I think that my business background helps to assess the cost of an event vs. the results. I always set goals when I was in the business arena and I do the same with my fundraising efforts. Also, as a broker I made millions of cold calls and got lots of rejections. That experience certainly helps when trying to raise money.
What is your greatest challenge at this time?
Trying to figure out how to get the Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMF) Gala to a 2 million dollar evening.

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

What magazine do you look forward to reading each week/month?
Vanity Fair, Harpers Bazaar, House and Garden
What is the most important thing you have learned through the years?
Don’t worry until you have to.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Nothing to worry about.
What is your favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
What is your favorite snack?
Anything salty………nuts, chips.
How do we get our young people more interested in charitable giving and community volunteering?
Obviously, we can do this by example. Also, I think that teaching children at a very young age to donate their old toys and clothing to organizations that are in need is a great way to start. One should always remind young people that there are people who are less fortunate than they are and that they can make a difference in someone’s life by giving their time and donations.
