Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D., assumed her duties as Vice President for Advancement and Community Relations at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) on August 1, 2013. Dr. O’Flannery Anderson provides leadership for NSU’s Office of Advancement and Community Relations. Her department is responsible for NSU’s efforts regarding community engagement and support, including all advancement, fundraising activities, alumni relations, special events and community relations. Under her leadership, NSU has received a national Silver Anvil award from the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) and several national awards of excellence from CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education). She is focused on raising the profile of NSU, growing support for the university, and engaging with the institution’s constituents. She reports directly to NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D.
Dr. O’Flannery Anderson joined NSU from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) where she was Vice President for Community Engagement and Executive Director of the FAU Foundation. Previously, she was President and CEO of the United Way of Broward County.
Dr. O’Flannery Anderson is involved in numerous community initiatives and organizations. She is Board Secretary and an executive committee member for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance as well as Secretary/Treasurer for the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches. Her community involvement includes the board of PACE Center for Girls, Winterfest Boat Parade, and the Chamber of the Palm Beaches. She is also a member of the 1000+ Club to Benefit Cancer, Inc., Royal Dames of Cancer Research, Funding Arts Broward (FAB!), the Tower Forum and the Riverwalk Trust. She previously served as Vice Chair of the North Broward Hospital District (Gubernatorial appointment) and was on the board of the United Way of Florida. She is a graduate of both Leadership Florida and Leadership Broward.
Dr. O’Flannery Anderson received her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University; her master’s degree from the University of South Florida; and her Ph.D. from Florida Atlantic University. In addition, she has participated in two executive leadership programs at Harvard University
She has resided in Fort Lauderdale for 17 years and is married to Peter Anderson.
Going back to when you first started with your organization to now, what has been your proudest personal accomplishment? It has been a thrill and a privilege to work for NSU, it is such a dynamic institution. I am extremely proud of our fundraising Campaign launch.
What program with your organization do you get the most excited about? Cancer research and the inroads and discoveries NSU researchers are making.
Is there a charitable event(s) you really look forward to attending each year? Pace Center for Girls dinner at Casa D’Angelo!
What is the most important thing you have learned through the years? First, to surround yourself with people who are smarter and better at their jobs than you; second, learn something new every day; and third, laugh!
What do you wish you could have a never-ending supply of? Time with my family – especially my parents!
Do you have a motto, or some words of wisdom, that has guided you through your life? Maya Angelou said, when you are gone people don’t remember what you said or what you did – they remember how you made them feel.
What are your favorite leisure time activities or hobbies? Cooking, traveling and walking my dogs.
Do you feel women have made progress in their quest to be treated fairly and equally in the workplace? Yes, but I feel there is still a long way to go. Much of what happens is not intentional but subtle and incremental.
You are evidently a very capable and talented woman/man, what other talent do you wish you had been born with? Dancing
What is the best book you have ever read? “All the Light you Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr is one of my recent favorites.
What is your greatest indulgence? Shopping and chocolate!
If your house was up for sale, and a potential buyer did a walk through, what would your home say about you? I hope they would say it is a happy home filled with warmth.
What is a moment you will never forget? When I met my husband, Peter.
What is your favorite Ice Cream flavor? Chocolate chip!
